- Mercedes-Benz released the first-generation C-Class for 1994 to replace the 190 at the bottom of its range. Called W202 internally, the model received its first AMG-developed evolution for 1995 and it later gained a V8 and the C43 designation in a bid to lure enthusiasts away from the BMW M3 — Mercedes-Benz had never put such a big engine in a small car before. Production of the W202 ended in 2000.
